What is an executable process model?

An executable process model describes a business process in detail and enables its automation with a workflow engine. It goes far beyond a simple representation of the individual steps and contains detailed information on interfaces, software, configuration and automation options.

How do I create an executable process model?

1. Record the current situation

Start by understanding the current process in detail, including all activities, decisions, information flows and players. Methods such as interviews, workshops, process observations and document analysis are suitable for this.

2. Define the target process

Define the ideal process flow – efficient, effective and error-free. To do this, identify the weak points of the actual process and define the necessary optimization measures.

3. Model the process

Next, depict the target process in a suitable model (notation), e.g. BPMN. Make sure that the model clearly and comprehensibly reflects all activities, decisions, information flows and players.

4. Identify automation potential

Check which parts of the process can be automated in order to increase efficiency and effectiveness. Use methods such as activity-based costing and return-on-investment analyses.

5. Develop a technical process model

Transfer the process model into an executable form, e.g. using workflow management software. Make sure that interfaces, implementations, configuration and parameters have been defined.

6. Test and optimize the model

Carry out simulations or initiate a pilot project to test the technical process model and, if necessary, make adjustments to correct errors or optimize the model.

7. implement and monitor

Introduce the executable process model in the company and train employees accordingly. Ensure that the process is continuously monitored and adapt it if necessary.
