DMN – Decision Model and Notation
DMN (Decision Model and Notation) is a standard developed to support process management in process modeling. DMN enables companies to model and execute complex decisions by separating the decision logic from the process itself. This leads to more clarity and flexibility.
Decision tables are used for the structured tabular presentation of rules. Based on input parameters, complex rules are applied that lead to the desired results. In addition, decision requirement diagrams (DRDs) visualize how decisions, inputs and sources of knowledge are linked.
In summary, the integration of DMN into business process management enables more flexible, dynamic and transparent decision-making in automated processes. The standard is particularly useful when the process requires complex or frequently changing rules, such as in the areas of pricing, authorizations or compliance.
When are decision tables used?
During the process, it is determined that too many decisions have been modeled and that they are becoming confusing due to the many branches and rules. In this case, the use of a decision table should be considered, which makes the process clearer and easier to understand.
